Best Practices for Fabric Steaming with a Steamfast Garment Steamer

To get the most out of your Steamfast garment steamer, focus on: proper fabric tension and targeted heating.

Hang your garment, pull the fabric gently taut from the bottom hem, and use long, slow vertical strokes. Let the steam relax the fibres to smooth out wrinkles quickly and efficiently.

Best Practices for Garment Steaming

  • Prep with Distilled Water: We recommend that you use distilled water in your Steamfast steamer. Tap water contains minerals that create limescale build up in the reservoir over time, reducing the efficiency of your steamer.

  • Purge First: Before putting the steamer to your fabric, turn it on and let it steam into the air for about 30 seconds. This clears out any condensed, cool water in the steamer so it doesn't leave wet spots on your clothing or fabrics.

  • Keep Fabric Taut: The biggest steaming mistake is leaving the fabric hanging loosely. Gently pull the bottom hem of the garment straight while steaming. This creates tension, allowing the steam to smooth out the fibres.

  • Steam From the Inside: For particularly stubborn wrinkles on button-up shirts, t-shirts, or blouses, try slipping the steamer head inside the garment. Pushing outwards while holding the fabric creates excellent tension and lets you see the creases melt away.

  • Give it Time to Dry: Steaming adds moisture to clothing. After steaming, leave the garment on the hanger in an airy, dry room for 5-10 minutes before putting it on. This allows the fibres in your garment to "set" in their new, unwrinkled state.

What Not to Do When Using A Fabric Steamer

  • Never steam your garment without reading the care label first.

  • Never steam clothes while wearing them: The high-temperature steam can cause severe burns.

  • Avoid over-steaming delicates: For fabrics like chiffon or nylon, hold the steamer head 3-5cms away from the fabric, rather than pressing it directly against the material.

Alternative Uses for Your Steamer

A Steamfast garment steamer is incredibly versatile. Beyond taking care of your wardrobe, you can:

  • Refresh curtains and drapes: You can steam curtains while they’re hanging up to blast away dust and remove creases & wrinkles.

  • Sanitise upholstery and bedding: The high heat of a Steamfast garment steamer can help sanitise and kill dust mites on couches, pillows, and mattresses.

  • Loosen tough wall decals: The steam from our garment steamers can soften the adhesive on wallpaper or stubborn vinyl wall stickers for easier removal.

Always check the tags on your clothing, fabrics and upholstery to confirm they can handle garment steaming. We recommend you spot test in a discreet spot on the garment first before using the steamer, to ensure the fabric is suitable.
